How It Works

Procedures to be followed when a horse is donated to a horse rescue:

  • R.A.C.E Fund, Inc. volunteers or the Horsemen’s Association will provide the initial R.A.C.E Fund Horse Intake Form to owners and trainers on the backside.
  • A R.A.C.E Fund Inc. Intake Form must be filled out by the owner or authorized agent for the owner of the horse and signed by same and returned to R.A.C.E Fund volunteer. (Note: theR.A.C.E Fund Horse Intake is for informational and record keeping and does not transfer ownership of the horse to R.A.C.E Fund).
  • The R.A.C.E Fund, Inc. volunteer will then contact a participating non-profit horse rescue to give them the information on the R.A.C.E. Horse Intake Form.
  • The accepting participating horse rescue then contacts the owner of the horse and sends the owner their horse donation form or will have the R.A.C.E Fund provide the participating horse rescue’s horse donation form to the owner of the horse for completion. The owner completes the horse donation form and returns it to the designated horse rescue with any medical records, coggins test, x-rays and any other applicable documents that are required. Note: The R.A.C.E. Fund will also provide the Jockey Club Sold Without Pedigree Form to all owners. The Sold Without Pedigree enables an owner to permanently cancel their horse's foal papers with the Jockey Club, Please see Jockey Club Rule 18. The owner of the horse can also return the completed participating horse rescue horse donation form and supporting documents to the R.A.C.E Fund and the R.A.C.E Fund will send to the participating horse rescue.
  • When possible, the owner of the horse arranges for the transportation of the horse to the rescue and pays for transportation costs. The R.A.C.E Fund may assist with arrangements and funding for transportation if need be.
  • It is the owner of the horse’s responsibility to determine the fair market value of the horse if applicable. (More information about determining “fair market value” can be obtained at www.irs.gov )
  • It is the participating non-profit horse rescue center’s responsibility to send the tax-deductible receipt to the owner of the donated horse.
  • At the end of each month, the participating horse rescue center will send an invoice to the R.A.C.E Fund, Inc. indicating the number of days that the horse has been at the rescue.
  • The R.A.C.E Fund, Inc. will send a check to the participating horse rescue for the donated horse for that month. (The amount the R.A.C.E Fund will pay per day per horse is not to exceed $5.00 a day and may be less depending on the funds available at the time.) The R.A.C.E Fund, Inc. does not guarantee funds.
  • The horse rescue will notify the R.A.C.E Fund, Inc. when a horse has been adopted and is no longer at their facility within (48) hours of the horse leaving. (Please note: failure of a horse rescue to notify the R.A.C.E Fund, Inc. that a horse is no longer at their facility within the designated time period may result in the termination of the horse rescue as a participating rescue and the loss of future funds)
  • A participating horse rescue may also request financial assistance from the R.A.C.E Fund, Inc for funds for euthanasia but the rescue must provide proof of the euthanasia via a veterinary report and the reason it was necessary and cost.

Owner of the Horse(s) Responsibilities

  • The owner must request a Horse Intake Form from a R.A.C.E Fund volunteer, fill it out, sign it and return it to the volunteer. (Note: the R.A.C.E Fund Horse Intake form is for informational and record keeping purposes only and does not transfer ownership of the horse to R.A.C.E Fund)
  • The owner must fill out a horse donation form from the participating horse rescue center.
  • The owner must provide any medical records, reports and x-rays that are available to the horse rescue center.
  • A donated horse must have a current coggins test and health certificate.
  • Stallions must be gelded first before consideration is given and the arrangement and expense for the procedure is the responsibility of the owner.
  • Transportation for the donated horse to the rescue center is the responsibility of the owner although some horse rescues either provide or will assist with transportation.
  • Upon completion of the donation process and surrender of the horse to the rescue center, the said rescue center becomes solely responsible for the care and well being of the donated horse.
  • It is the responsibility of the owner of the horse to determine any fair market value of the horse. (More information about determining “fair market value” can be obtained at www.irs.gov )
  • The owner understands that the R.A.C.E Fund, Inc. is a funding source and not the horse rescue and at no time is the R.A.C.E Fund responsible or liable for the horse, its condition or any injuries, diseases or death of the horse. Furthermore, the owner understands that R.A.C.E Fund, Inc. cannot guarantee a payment every month to the rescue for the donated horse. The owner also agrees not to hold the R.A.C.E Fund, Inc. liable in any manner by agreeing to the stipulations above and signing the Intake Form.
